Have you ever felt the pull of a place that seems almost forgotten by time? That’s Horseshoe Harbor for me, nestled near Copper Harbor within the Mary Macdonald Preserve. Established in 1982, this preserve now spans an impressive 1,200 acres, featuring a rugged yet stunning five-mile stretch of Lake Superior’s shoreline. Here, the passage of time feels different, more deliberate, as if each moment is savored by the landscape itself.
As we tread softly along the rocky shores on this sunny spring day, we are guests in a habitat that supports an array of life, including eleven threatened or rare species. This fragile ecosystem, where tough lichens and sparse vegetation cling to life on the ancient volcanic rocks, serves as a stark reminder of the resilience and vulnerability of nature. Just inland, the environment shifts, with lush forests of balsam fir, white cedar, white birch, and spruce providing a rich habitat for wildlife such as black bears, snowshoe hares, and a variety of bird species like the peregrine falcon, bald eagle, and various warblers.
This beautiful but delicate area teaches us the importance of walking gently and leaving no trace. Each step we take can impact the fragile lichens and slow-growing plants that are vital to the ecosystem’s health. It is crucial that we practice careful stewardship—staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife, and ensuring we leave this place as untouched as we find it, allowing future visitors to experience the same untouched beauty.
If your spirit is drawn to places where nature speaks softly and the air is filled with the scent of spruce and cedar, then the trails and hidden coves of Horseshoe Harbor await. Let’s cherish and protect these magical spaces by embracing the principles of Leave No Trace, ensuring that the preserve continues to be a sanctuary for all its inhabitants.
