2024 Recap: Incredible Moments and the Future of Lume Photography in 2025

Hi friends! As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year that was nothing short of incredible—a year filled with unforgettable moments, personal growth, and a whole lot of gratitude.

2024 in Review

This year was packed with amazing experiences and so many moments that left me in awe.

Let’s start with one of my absolute favorite memories: Kylie and Sarah’s elopement in Marquette on May 2. It poured rain the entire day, and let me tell you, it was magical. This was my first wedding of the year, and it could not have been a more perfect way to kick off the season. The dense fog, the quiet intimacy of the ceremony, and the fact that I got to officiate—my dream! Funny enough, back in January or February, I was joking that I wished every elopement could be on a rainy, foggy day, and the universe heard me loud and clear. For the next couple of months, that’s exactly what I got…and I wasn’t mad about it!

Another standout was Colin and Mary’s elopement at Horseshoe Harbor. We were hit with a torrential downpour while exploring the volcanic rock ridge, and the atmosphere was so moody, romantic, and otherworldly. Colin and Mary embraced every second of it, and it made for the most incredible experience. Oh man, as I’m writing this I’m thinking about how behind I am on blogging! I need to share more of the amazing stories from this year.

And how could I forget the two elopement ceremonies that took place standing right in Lake Superior? There’s something so special about being literally immersed in nature during such an intimate moment. Truly, every single couple I met this year was a highlight. Their trust in me and their willingness to embrace the unique and the wild made this year unforgettable.

Here’s a glimpse into some of the work that made 2024 so special:

Personal Highlights from 2024

The first half of the year was a whirlwind, but I managed to keep things balanced—a mix of work and rest. The Copper Dog happens the first weekend in March. The 2023/2024 winter was so mild they almost had to cancel it! But it took place, just modified so the dogs wouldn’t overheat. The Copper Dog is one of my favorite events up here. It’s a weekend of festivities and fun! The dogs are PSYCHED – they LOVE running! In April, I took Natalie to Mackinac Island for a girl’s only trip. We stayed at a super haunted inn, and stocked up on the best fudge in the world- Murdick’s. Natalie’s favorite was the butterfly house.

This summer I took Natalie to her first concert – Glass Animals at Pine Knob in Clarkston, MI. It’s about a 9-hour drive, but it was totally worth it. I can’t even tell you how many concerts I’ve been to at Pine Knob – it was so close to where I lived for most of my life. It almost feels like a second home. Getting to take Natalie there to see one of our favorite bands was amazing! If you haven’t heard of Glass Animals, you might recognize some of their radio hits like “Heat Waves” and “Creatures in Heaven”. Highly recommend!

One big change this summer was moving my horse, Scarlett, to a new barn. We were “adopted” into an incredible barn family, and it’s been such a joy! Riding through the stunning nature of the UP with Scarlett was a highlight of my summer, and she seemed to love it just as much as I did. I spent lots of time outside this summer, exploring new places and re-visiting my favorites. Scott took me to an alpaca farm in July as a surprise for my birthday. I’m not sure how I feel about alpacas, lol! They’re soft fuzzy aliens.

Fall rolled in with its extra-long season, and for the first time in forever, I didn’t overbook myself. That was a challenge, but wow, was it worth it. I had enough free time to hike with Walter, explore new places, and really soak up all the beauty of the season. Plus, my mom and my son, Evan, came up for a visit in October, which was such a gift. Early fall brought another treat: season passes to the Nordic Spa at Mt. Bohemia. I’m officially obsessed. If you haven’t been, the salt crystal sauna is a must!

As winter arrived, I was READY. I’ve always loved this season for its slower pace and cozy vibes. Our home feels extra magical this time of year, with string lights, candles, and little touches of the outdoors brought inside. One new tradition this year? Reading a story each week from Nordic Tales, a collection of Scandinavian folktales that ties into my heritage. And of course, there’s Copper Harbor—my winter haven. Snowshoeing, bonfires by the frozen lakeshore, and dark skies full of stars and northern lights have been soul-soothing. Speaking of Lady Aurora, 2024 was an AMAZING year for northern lights! I had so many opportunities to refine my astrophotography skills—such a thrill.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As I sit here reflecting, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who was a part of my 2024 journey. Whether you trusted me to document your wedding day, cheered me on from afar, or supported my business in any way, thank you. Truly.

2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year! First, there are some changes coming to Lume Photography. With the rising costs of living and doing business (thanks a lot, inflation…) and my commitment to giving each of my couples the best experience possible, my rates will be increasing. I’ll also be revamping my offerings—adding even more value to my experiences so they’re worth every penny. I can’t wait to share more about what’s coming.

One big goal for 2025 is to start planning some travel again. Not a full return to pre-COVID jet-setting, but enough to scratch that wanderlust itch and bring destination elopements back into my life. Travel feeds my soul, and I’m so ready for it. Another goal? Continuing to prioritize balance. For years, I hustled nonstop and paid the price with stress and burnout. I’ve learned that taking care of myself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. When I’m rested and recharged, I can pour so much more energy and passion into the work I love.

To everyone reading this: thank you for being part of my world. I’m beyond grateful and so excited to see what 2025 brings. Cheers to a year full of connection, joy, and new adventures!

Happy New Year!
