Intimate and Meaningful: A Keweenaw Peninsula Elopement
“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where, I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I don’t know any other way of loving.”
~ Pablo Neruda
S and C knew they didn’t need a big production with a big guest list, dj, table linens. They were looking for something quieter, something real. So they chose the edge of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, where the road ends and the land opens up to the wild.
They brought only a few people with them, including their dog Vincent (who was super adorable). The story began with getting ready and a first look at their Airbnb. It was simple and honest, filled with lost of emotion. After that, we packed up and started the long drive to the ceremony location. It took time to get there, winding through forest down dirt roads and through water holes, but the destination was worth every minute. We stopped at a waterfall briefly, on the way to do some portraits with everyone.
When we arrived at the ceremony location, they wandered for a bit before choosing a spot to stand. They knew right away when they had arrived at the correct spot. The sky was overcast and the air was colder than we expected. The earlier rain had moved on, leaving everything wet and moody. There were no bugs, no people, no noise. Just the sound of wind, waves, and the quiet presence of something deeper.
Their friend led the ceremony. It was heartfelt and personal, full of meaning in every word. Even though her dad (who she was very close with) had passed, his presence felt strong throughout the day. I kept sensing it in little moments (and I’m not the only one who felt it).
After the vows, they laid out a handmade quilt that has been in Shaundra’s family for generations. There was a simple, ceremonial picnic and we let the moment settle in. Then we wandered the rocky coast with lanterns, letting the soft light guide us. When the sun dipped lower, we returned to the Airbnb for a quiet toast and a warm ending to a deeply meaningful day.
This elopement was never about big moments or a perfect timeline. It was about presence, connection, and honoring what matters most.
I’m Andrea.
Photographer, storyteller, wanderer of woods and old paths. I believe in the kind of love that’s quiet and powerful. The kind that shows up in small gestures, knowing glances, shared silence. I photograph real moments because those are the ones that matter most- the ones that hold the soul of the story.
